Medicine still remains the most popular choice of stream among students in India, and there are several reasons to it. Some pursue medicine out of choice; some for the prestige it adds to them in society; and some do it because they think it’s an evergreen branch of education.

While AIIMS remains the ‘Cherry on ice-cream’, topping the list of best medical colleges year-on-year in India, other medical institutions, including Christian Medical College Vellore, Aligarh Muslim University and Kasturba Medical college Manipal University are some of the other A-Class institutions which fall under the top 10 category. Getting through any of these coveted institutions requires one to pass 12th Board Exam and, subsequently crack the entrance exams conducted by the respective institutions.

The courses ‘MBBS’ and ‘BDS’ offered in India spans over a period of five and half years and five years respectively including one year of mandatory internship in rural villages. In this article, we have listed out the 12 entrance exams conducted for undergraduate (MBBS, BDA, BMS, BAMS and BVSc) and Post Graduate courses spread across more than 500 Medical colleges across the country.

AIIMS

Established in the year 1952, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, or popularly known as AIIMS, is the most competitive medical college in India. The government started six more branches across states, catering to the growing demand of medical healthcare in India, and there are many more to come in future. Each year more than 1,00,000 students compete for just 707 seats spread across seven branches of AIIMS.

Eligibility:

Candidates who have passed 10+2 (or its equivalent) with English, Chemistry, Physics and Biology and with a minimum of 60% (some relaxations are given to SC/ST candidates) are eligible to apply for AIIMS entrance exam.

NEET

National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET)- conducted by CBSE- is a common entrance exam for both Government and Private medical Institutions conducted for medical aspirants all over the country.  The NEET has been the most controversial entrance exam in India as there had been a lot of obstruction from few states with regard to state reservations, however, the honorable Supreme Court finally decided to hold a single entrance exam throughout the country from 2016 on, when the entrance was conducted in two phases: Phase 1 as NEET-1; Phase-2 as NEET-2 for those who could not appear in Phase 1.

Eligibility:

The candidate must not be less than 17 years old and the upper limit is 25 years and must have scored a minimum of 50% in Physics, Chemistry and Biology taken together.

JIPMER

Jawaharlal Institute of Post-Graduate Medical Education and Research, or JIPMER as it popularly known as in the student community, is one of the most sought after institutions after AIIMS. Based out of Puduchery, It offers MBBS through its competitive entrance exam, for which more than 25,000 students appear every year.

Eligibility:

The candidates applying for the AMU Medical Entrance Test needs to have scored a minimum of 50% in 12th, or its equivalent in subjects of Physics, Chemistry, English and Biology.

CMC Vellore

Often ranked just after the most prestigious AIIMS, CMC Vellore – affiliated to Dr. MGR Medical University, Chennai – conducts its medical entrance exam all over India. With over 20,000 students appearing for its entrance test, the intake capacity for its undergraduate course is very limited – just about 60 seats.

The candidate must have qualified the 12th (or its equivalent) board exam with no less than 60% in Physics, Chemistry and Biology taken together.

COMEDK

COMEDK (The Consortium of Medical Engineering and Dental Colleges of Karnataka) conducts the entrance exam for both engineering and medical aspirants in the state of Karnataka. The entrance test is accepted by about 15 medical colleges, 25 Dental Colleges and most engineering institutions (for admission for BE and B.Tech)

The candidate must have qualified the 12th (or its equivalent) board exam with no less than 55% in Physics, Chemistry and Biology taken together.

MU OET Medical

Manipal University tops the list of private medical colleges in India with AAA+++ rating. The private University holds the examination annually for aspirants seeking admissions to various medical courses like MBBS, BDS and paramedical courses. The University has two designated branches: one in Manipal and other one in Mangalore. The candidates will have an advantage of joining this institution as it is recognized by various international medical governing bodies, The Malaysian Medical Council and The General Council Medical of Great Britain included.

The candidate must have qualified the 12th (or its equivalent) board exam with no less than 55% in Physics, Chemistry and Biology taken together.

AIPMT

All India Pre-Medical Test or simply AIPMT is perhaps one of the most challenging-to-crack entrance tests in India. Conducted by CBSE board, the application cost ranges from 500 to 1000 depending up on the reservation category of the candidate applying for it.

The University of Delhi has scrapped the medical entrance exam – called ‘DU-MET’ post the introduction of the national level AIPMT exam and has started taking in candidates through the latter and through which several colleges across the country are accepting applications.

Eligibility:

A candidate has to pass 12th (or its equivalent) with a minimum of 50% marks in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics along with English. The age must not be less than 18  and more than 25, however, relaxation is given to the reserved categories.

Application Fee for:

  1. General Category: Rs. 1000/-
  2. SC/ST and other reservation categories: Rs. 550/-

AIPGMEE

AIPGMEE-  All India Postgraduate Medical Entrance Examination is the entrance exam conducted for the post graduate courses such as MD Diploma and MS, covering subjects like Pathology, Pediatrics, Psychiatry, Surgery, ENT, Orthopedics & Anesthesia, among others. It is conducted to offer opportunities to MBBS/BDS graduates who wish to continue with their higher studies.

Conducted by National Board of Examinations (NBE), the entrance exam for post graduate courses start in the month of September.

Eligibility:

The candidate must have completed MBBS from a recognized university in India, and he or she should be able to produce the Original documents issued by the Medical Council of India or at least provide the provisional degree certificate issued by the institution of study.

Application Fee for:

  1. General/OBC Category: Rs. 3750/-
  2. SC/ST and other reservation categories: Rs. 2750/-

AFMC ENTRANCE

Unlike other medical institutions where the candidate has to compulsorily undergo one year of internship upon completion of the course – MBBS/BDS, the candidates accepted to the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC) have to mandatorily serve in the Indian Armed Medical Services for seven years in continuity.

Eligibility:

Candidates who have passed 10+2 (or its equivalent) with Chemistry, Physics and Biology and securing at least 60% (some relaxations are given to SC/ST candidates) are eligible to apply for AFMC entrance exam.

Application Fee: Rs. 280/-

Test Pattern:

The candidate will be tested for knowledge in Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Logical Reasoning, Intelligence and Reading Comprehension.

AICEE

AICEE (All India Common Entrance Examination)- conducted by the Veterinary Council of India- is a one of its kind entrance exam conducted all over India for various courses in Veterinary Sciences. The duration of BVSc. (Bachelor of Veterinary Sciences) spans over a period of five complete years, including six months of compulsory internship.

Eligibility:

The candidate must have qualified the 12th (or its equivalent) board exam with no less than 50% in Physics, Chemistry, English and Biology taken together. Relaxation by up to 10% for reserved category students.

BHU PMT

Banaras Hindu University Pre Medical Test (BHU-PMT) is conducted annually by the University. The entrance test is conducted for admission to Bachelors degree courses such as MBBS, BMS, BDS and BAMS, among others. There are 83 seats for MBBS for which candidates are selected though the highly competitive test while BAMS and BDS have only 50 and 38 seats respectively. The University has 33 seats for Bpharm.

Eligibility:

The candidate must have qualified the 12th (or its equivalent) board exam with no less than 50% in Physics, Chemistry, English and Biology taken together.

The candidates appearing for the 12th Board Exams may also apply. The application is subject to meeting the minimum criteria set by the University failing which the application will get cancelled. The application fee is non-refundable.

AMU Medical

Aligarh Muslim University offers MBBS and BDS courses through its prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences and Dr. Ziauddin Ahmed Dental College respectively. The university has a limited number of seats – 145 for MBBS and 35 for BDS. The entrance exam is conducted in two parts namely preliminary and mains. Those clearing the preliminary round are called for mains.

Eligibility:

The candidates applying for the AMU Medical Entrance Test needs to have scored a minimum of 50% in 12th, or its equivalent in subjects of Physics, Chemistry, English and Biology.
